Can I Hear from God?

As I am writing, I’m just listening for thoughts that I know I probably wouldn’t have on my own. They are usually tender, quiet thoughts.

Of course, you can! You have the ability.

I used to hear people speak about hearing from God in one way or another. And I always wondered…”What’s that like? Will I ever be able to hear from God?” I felt like it wasn’t going to happen for me.

That was and is a lie.

There is an open door, a grace like never before, to hear from Your Heavenly Father right now…TODAY.

It’s not just something resigned for those in Biblical times. It’s in the present…it’s in the NOW.

Sure, sometimes those like Moses heard an audible voice from the heavens. But that’s not necessarily how it will always go down. Sometimes it’s that still small voice that may even sound like your own voice.

Jesus told us that we were better off if he left us. This seems so hard to fathom. But the truth is we are. He gave his life for us, and even within this immense sacrifice he still made sure we were cared for. “If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit or truth.” John 14:15-17 NIV

Jesus, our greatest advocate. Always pulling for us. Always, preparing a way for us. This is pulling so tenderly at my heart as I type. Tears welling in my eyes. Thank you, sweet sweet Jesus.

This Counselor is the Holy Spirit.

When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from our Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

John 15:26, NIV

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you…But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

John 16:7-14, NIV

If you feel like you’re hearing from the Lord through the Holy Spirit, but you’re not sure, ask for confirmation.

Your Heavenly Papa will not leave you hanging. He will always confirm his ways.

Confirmation may come in different ways:

  • Always, always, always, use the Word of God to confirm what you’re hearing. His Word, His Breath, is as much alive and relevant today as it has ever been. God’s sovereignty is beyond comprehension. It is trustworthy…He is trustworthy. Get in His Word and read for yourself.
  • Ask for guidance from those spiritual mentors in your life. Although, if they are also walking in wisdom they will also point you to His Word.
  • Here at KS, we love teaching others how to Two-way Journal. This is a technique used to plug into hearing from the Lord in a very unique way. Not a writer? That’s okay, you may be amazed at what you hear and write.

How To: Two-way Journaling

Get still with the Lord. However, you do that. For me (Rebeka B.) that means turning on praise and worship music. I have a few of my favorite playlists. Click here to check them out.

I enter His presence with praise and worship. Just singing, praying, writing my praises. I usually do this during my alone time because having kids around asking me a million questions can be very distracting. Ha!

I have the Word open, with my journal, and pen in hand. As I’m reading, I’m in agreement with His Word. And I just start talking to God through my pen. Just like a conversation. I may have praises, prayer requests, or even questions.

As I am writing, I’m just listening for thoughts that I know I probably wouldn’t have on my own. They are usually tender, quiet thoughts. You know, that still small voice. They are dripping with humility, righteousness, and grace…always so much grace.

During this time, maybe you feel like God is asking you to do something, step out in obedience. There have been many times where I think, “God, was that you? Are you asking me to do XYZ?” How do you really know?

Well, this is what I know and believe 100%. Regardless, if it is an actual call to action from your Heavenly Father via the Spirit of truth…walking it out in faith and obedience is always a good thing. Always.

He will never ask you to do anything that goes against His Word. His Word is His Breath. It is good, it is love; it is ALWAYS wrapped in LOVE.

Have you ever just been minding your own business and then suddenly a person pops in your mind? And you’re like, “Huh, that was weird. I haven’t thought about so-and-so in forever. So strange.”

And then maybe you have the simple urge to pray for that person, text them, or call them?

God uses this way of communicating with me all the time. THIS simple thought is God speaking to you. It’s the Spirit of truth relaying a message from the heart of the Father.

So you reach out to this person, whose name just popped in your brain “randomly” and they say something like…”Wow, thank you for reaching out. I’ve been really struggling and hearing from you has helped so much.”

Coincidence? Nope.

Holy Spirit working through YOU.

The bottom line is you can hear from God.

He is speaking to you.

You, me, we…we have to take the time to plug into Him and His Word.

Get still and listen, friend. He’s waiting so eagerly to chat.

I highly recommend reading John chapters 14 and 15, And also Acts chapter 2 to get an even better explanation of who the Spirit of truth is, why He came, and how He came.
