What does it mean to bear fresh fruit?
In the Christian’s life, we are called to abide in Jesus. What He produces inside us, as we follow Him, will then become an outward expression of our character, which is now His character. Oh yes, He changes us from the inside out!
One commentary said it this way:
“Bearing fruit” is a phrase used to describe the outward actions that result from the inward condition of a person’s heart.
How do we change the condition of our hearts, then?
- We stay close and abide in Jesus in a personal, close relationship.
- We learn to chew on God’s Word and read it often.
- We allow and permit the Holy Spirit to help us make the changes that we need to make.
- We walk and hang out with the right people.
- We then become a tree, always blooming.
Here’s how scripture describes the blessing that comes from an obedient lifestyle in Christ: “You thrill to God’s Word, you chew on Scripture day and night. You’re a tree replanted in Eden, bearing fresh fruit every month, never dropping a leaf, always in blossom.” Psalm 1: 2-3, MSG In other words, whatever we do prospers.
This type of tree withstands the buffeting of the winds while flourishing. It blesses man, animals and birds with its unfailing fruit and shade.
The prophet Jeremiah said the same thing, showing us the blessing that comes from one who trusts in the Lord totally. He said: “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17: 7-8
Folks, when the heat comes into our lives, we will stand and still be able to produce good fruit, fruit that remains.
How? We remain in Him, not in ourselves.
