B-Attitudes (The Beatitudes 11)

Great is our reward in heaven as we follow hard after our God.

Posted on

There are times that bring forth in us a time of rejoicing.  Here, as we come to a closing in our B-Attitudes, The Beatitudes, we read this:

“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”  Matthew 5: 12

Jesus is instructing us to rejoice when we are persecuted for following Him, just like they persecuted the prophets that went before us.

As a follower of Jesus, we will be laughed at, misunderstood, ridiculed, and sometimes even punished, all because we follow Jesus.

Even if our character is love and kindness, we will suffer as He suffered.  Yet, He is exhorting us to rejoice and be glad if we are persecuted because of our Christian values.

There is a reward awaiting us when we reach our heavenly home.

There are other scriptures that allude to this same theme of being persecuted.  One example of being a disciple that has grown in the Lord is when “The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing, because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name.”  Acts 5: 41

Remember, the apostles had just been flogged, which is beaten with a Jewish penalty of forty lashes, minus one.  After they beat them, they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus again and they let them go.

What did the apostles do next?  “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.”  Acts 5: 42

Now that’s what I call suffering persecution.  Their obedience to the Holy Spirit never stopped them because they were convinced that they “Must obey God rather than men.”  Acts 5: 29

Holy Spirit boldness in that depth brought forth their obedience that came from their faith within.

When the call of God is upon your life, no man can stop it.

Inside is our Living Hope; His name is Jesus. Great is our reward in heaven as we follow hard after our God.  For the prophets were those who were persecuted for the name of Jesus, so it is with us.

We Are A Blessed People No Matter How Difficult Our Journey.
