Assured of Life-Giving Words Being a Fountain

Is our speech producing a calmness, when others hear our counsel?

Posted on

“The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.”  (Proverbs 18: 4)

I never thought of wisdom being a bubbling brook, but I can relate to this girl’s mouth getting me into deep trouble, which could be similar to deep waters or let’s say deep doo-doo.

While having that thought, I began searching Google images looking for a brook.  I came across a video of a stream that had the relaxing sound of continual running water.  As I watched the flowing water rolling over the rocks, it was as if I could step right into the picture.

Two things I learned about bubbling brooks:

  • They never stop flowing.
  • They are continually refreshing.

Our words can produce that effect, to be a fountain of wisdom, and a fountain of life!  So I ask rhetorically:

Are our words bringing life and refreshment?  Desiring an answer, I probed further, looking for how our mouth can be a fountain of life.  Here’s a small sample of what I found.  I’ve called them:

KINGDOM TRUTHS THAT BRING A FOUNTAIN OF LIFE:

  • Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning…”  (Proverbs 10: 13)
  • “The tongue of the righteous is choice silver...” (Proverbs 10: 20)
  • “The lips of the righteous nourish many…”  (Proverbs 10: 21)
  • “The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom.”  (Proverbs 10: 31)
  • “The lips of the righteous know what is fitting…”  (Proverbs 10: 32)

All of these verses are in just one chapter!  Take a look at the words that I have in bold and ponder what life-giving speech can produce.  Amazing isn’t it?

We all have stood in front of a calming brook and gleamed from its relaxing effects.  Picture after picture we catch listening to the sound of the moving water flowing down upon the rocks.  These saturated rocks are mixed in pure, white color.

Is our speech producing a calmness, when others hear our counsel?  If wisdom is a fountain, like a bubbling brook, it should release a calming, relaxing effect.

Here’s what happens if we don’t learn to control our tongue.  I have highlighted some of these words to prove my point:

  • fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.”  (Proverbs 18: 6)
  • “A fool’s mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul.”  (Proverbs 18: 7)
  • “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.”  (Proverbs 18: 8)

Looking at these verbs, they are not really soothing, are they?  Yuk!

KINGDOM KEY:  We receive a harvest from our words.  Here’s why:

From the fruit of his mouth a man’s stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied.” (Proverbs 18: 20)

“From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things, as surely as the work of his hands rewards him.”  (Proverbs 12: 14)

He is the Lord of the Harvest.

KINGDOM TRUTH:  A man who speaks with wisdom will reap a harvest from his words, just as a farmer enjoys the crops he planted.

The “fruit of our lips” can produce either fruit that will fall to the ground and be wasted, or fruit that is tasted, digested, yet remains. “The Word of the Lord remains forever.”  (1 Peter 1: 25)
