Is there one area in our life that brings us to a full commitment, wholeheartedly? That area of our life would be parenting. It is the most fully rewarding aspect of life that requires whole-hearted devotion.
The first time a mother and father lay their eyes on their child, it’s love at first sight. With this relationship we jump in with both feet, eager and willing with no reservations at all. Our child is given to love and care for. It’s hard to describe the depth of this kind of love, that is instantaneous.
Have we ever thought that this kind of love we feel with our children, is the depth of love that God has for us, His children, yet even more so?
His love is even given with more depth. Why? God is love!
His entire essence is love and not something He has to learn how to do.
With God as our Heavenly Father does He desire this kind of love from us? Yes, He longs for it more than we know! In this relationship, we are called to wholehearted devotion.
He spoke about this way back in the Old Testament as He was calling His children to Himself, delivering them from captivity, saying, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.” Deuteronomy 6: 5
Do we love God with all of our heart, soul, and strength?
Fast-forwarding to the New Testament, Jesus summed it up this way. He said, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Mark 12: 29-30
A couple of verses later He said, “This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law.” Mark 12: 33
Remember, Jesus is the end of the law.
What does that mean? I’ll say it another way, “Christ has already accomplished (through the cross) the purpose for which the law was given. As a result, all who believe in Him are made right with God. Romans 10: 4 Emphasis added
When He cried out on the cross, “It is finished,” there was a lot more completed and ended than we fully understand.
HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND? We should ask ourselves this question: Have we been made right with God through Jesus? If the answer is yes, we are called His Bride. A bride cannot have a causal relationship with her bridegroom, for she is called to a fully committed, whole-hearted devotion. Should not Jesus, our Bridegroom, ask the same of us?
