All In
Are you all in, friends? It is easy to become apathetic and to just go through the motions. We can struggle in this life but when we remember Christ’s sacrifice it fuels passionate lives for the One Who gave His all for us so we can give our all. We can’t walk the fence and be “All in”.
Bible Reading of the Day: Psalms 102-104
In Psalm 102, the Psalmist is crying out to God in a desperate place. When life is hard, painful, our response to that stimulus of pain will determine how long we stay there and, I might add, the condition of our stay. The Psalmist was real with God and real about his vivid description of suffering. But he saw his affliction in light of eternity.
This is something that John Piper talks about. We have hope in our suffering because our suffering is temporary. And the superior pleasure we have in Christ makes any sorrow on earth pale in comparison. It does not mean that suffering is not hard, but if our focus is on what God has planned, we have joy because we know he already knows the end and will give us sufficient grace to walk through our suffering.
All In—In Suffering
Psalm 102:1-18
“1 Lord, hear my prayer; let my cry for help come before you. 2 Do not hide your face from me in my day of trouble. Listen closely to me; answer me quickly when I call. 3 For my days vanish like smoke, and my bones burn like a furnace. 4 My heart is suffering, withered like grass; I even forget to eat my food. 5 Because of the sound of my groaning, my flesh sticks to my bones. 6 I am like an eagle owl, like a little owl among the ruins. 7 I stay awake; I am like a solitary bird on a roof. 8 My enemies taunt me all day long; they ridicule and use my name as a curse. 9 I eat ashes like bread and mingle my drinks with tears 10 because of your indignation and wrath; for you have picked me up and thrown me aside. 11 My days are like a lengthening shadow, and I wither away like grass.
All In—At All Times
12 But you, Lord, are enthroned forever; your fame endures to all generations. 13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show favor to her— the appointed time has come. 14 For your servants take delight in its stones and favor its dust. 15 Then the nations will fear the name of the Lord, and all the kings of the earth your glory, 16 for the Lord will rebuild Zion; he will appear in his glory. 17 He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute and will not despise their prayer. 18 This will be written for a later generation, and a people who have not yet been created will praise the Lord.”
Our suffering is a testimony to future generations. Will we walk with God in suffering? Will we choose the superior pleasure of trusting in God? And will we bless God when times are good and bad? Are we “All In” at all times?
All In—Responding with Praise
Psalm 103 is an answer to the Psalmist’s suffering. He chooses praise.
Scripture of the Day: Psalm 103:1-5
“1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. 2 Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. 3 He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. 4 He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. 5 He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!”
God satisfies us, friends! He is all we need. When we trust Him, He promises to use every place for our good and His glory. When we are “All in” we find the greatest joy known to man. We do what we were made to do and this satisfies more than any earthly thing ever could.
Let’s be “All in” for all of our life with Jesus. In closing, The Psalmist shows us how to be “All in” Psalm 104: 33-35.
“I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God while I live. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him; I will rejoice in the Lord. 35 May sinners vanish from the earth and wicked people be no more. My soul, bless the Lord! Hallelujah!”
Oh God, take all of our life, use it for Your glory!
Application
- When we are “All in”, we have joy uncontainable.
