A Lamp To My Feet

Let the truth of His word light the way in our lives and upon our paths.

Posted on

Have you ever walked in the dark and didn’t see where your feet were taking you?  You could feel the pavement or surface underneath, but you couldn’t see if there were holes or ruts ahead of you that you could step into and get hurt.

It could be dangerous walking in the dark.  There could be a cliff up ahead or a road that’s closed, but you couldn’t tell because there was no light shining on your path.

What would we do when walking in the dark?  We pull out the flashlight that’s on our cell phone and light the way.

Well, the Psalmist declares that God’s Word is the lamp to our feet.  “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  (Psalm 119: 105)  His Word shines the light to where I’m going.  It not only illuminates our feet, but it also lights our path.

  • Without His light, we will grope about in darkness.

Let His Light Guide Your Path

Isaiah shares when Jerusalem was threatened by the king of Assyria, telling the people, through his field commander, to basically, abandon their faith.

But the Lord’s work against the Assyrian threat shows us He will light our path.  Hezekiah was under great pressure to make an alliance with Egypt.  Earlier he had removed all the high places and altars that were set up for Baal worship.

The Lord wanted them to trust in Him, instead of Egypt.

  • The light of our path is to be lit where God is taking us, not to go back where we’ve been, back in bondage.
  • Our path is lit to move forward, not backward.

Let The Light Of His Word Be A Light On Our Prayers

King Hezekiah hears that Assyria wants Jerusalem.  What does he do?  He, “Went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.   He prayed, “Give ear, O Lord, and hear; open your eyes, O Lord, and see; listen to all the words…” (Isaiah 37: 20)

  • The light of His word and our prayers go forward and up to the Living God.

God declared, “I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant.”  (Isaiah 37: 36)

  • God even defends for the sake of just one.
  • God has promises to fulfill, as He promised David an enduring throne in Jerusalem.

David offered many prayers up, and the light of the nation shall still walk in them.

Let The Light Of His Word Bring Forth Growth

God desires to have illumination occur for us to grow in the “Deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.”  (1 Timothy 3: 9)

There were qualifications of being a deacon or overseer in the church.  This is just one.

  • Let the truth of His word be illuminated lighting the way in our lives and His way upon our paths.
  • Those who serve well will gain well.

We as God’s people, conducting ourselves in God’s household, strong in the living God, are the pillar and foundation of the truth.

It is His Word and Spirit alive in us, that will enable us to be counted worthy to not only read His Word but live it!  If that happens, not only will our feet be lit up, but our entire being will, as we walk out our faith.

We are told, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.  See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples.”  (Isaiah 60: 1)

  • We are the light in the darkness.
