Hebrews 14:6, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”
I read a story about a certain region of the world, where hot springs and cold springs are found side by side. Because of the convenience of this natural phenomenon, the women of the area bring their laundry to these waters, washing the clothes in the hot springs and then rinsing them in the cold ones.
A thoughtful tourist once commented to a guide, “The people who live here must be thankful that Mother Nature has so generously supplied them with hot and cold water.”
The guide answered, “No, they’re not. They’re too busy complaining because she didn’t give them soap.”
Well, there you have it. Truth be told, as this world continues, and we see the end closer than ever before we have begun to see a lot more negativity and lack of gratitude. I try not to let the things happening around me bring me down, but it has crept its way into our home a time or two now, more than ever before. It has even made its way into our churches, among those who have been taught the message of faith.
People complain more about what they don’t have or about those who have done them wrong, and with social media at an all-time high, we see people complaining more about how unfair life is to them, about what their other friends may have or are able to do. It’s become more about focusing on the problems rather than the solutions.
Yet, God, our source for every solution, has not changed. Think about this for a moment. God, the God of the universe, the omnipotent, all-wise, all-loving, righteous, true, sinner saving Lord. The One who loves us with an everlasting love, who drew us into His Kingdom, stands ready to bless and help us more than we could imagine, and has given us a promise.
David recognized it in Psalm 54:4 and it’s 4 words that we all should hold onto in every situation. God is my Helper. God stands ready to help everyone, including you and me!
So, what has caused so many of us to see the glass half empty instead of half full? So many times, we have forgotten to have gratitude. We are so busy looking at the negative side of situations that we don’t see the blessings we have been given. Maybe we’ve become complainers while we wait for God to do something for us.
As Christians, the words God is my Helper should resound through our day. I am really not feeling well, but God is my helper! He can heal me. My child is not doing well spiritually, and I’m at my wit’s end, but God is my helper! He can melt my child’s hard heart! My kids are running around the house driving me insane, but God is my helper! He can give me patience and peace in a house full of crazy. I’ve sinned in the same way again and again and again, but God is my helper! He will give me power to overcome this sin.
There is no situation too great for God. No heart too hard, no budget too tight, no boss too difficult, for God. God is your helper! He is my helper!
What hinders us from remembering this promise? Some say it’s because their life is just too busy. Yes, that is true, we live in a very busy era and technology has seemed to make life all the busier. But, even in this busy life, we seem to find time for the things we want to make time for. We should never be so busy that we shut God out of our lives. Not only is He the source of our life, but He is also our Helper. Shutting God out hinders our ability to thrive as it shuts out what makes life meaningful.
Many Christians have lost the image of God’s greatness and majesty. They have allowed too many things into their lives that cloud their view of God. They have stopped recognizing who He is and acknowledging He is our Creator and source of everything. In all situations, we all have reasons to give thanks to God, our Creator, and Jesus our Redeemer. The One who promises to be our Helper at all times.
It is time for us, as Christians, to turn back to our roots. Stop letting pride get in the way, stop letting the business of life get in the way, and remember God is my help. Turn to Him with thanksgiving and let Him help you. David gives the best example of how to turn to God with thanksgiving and how God turned things around for him. Psalm 30:10-12, “Lord, hear me and have mercy on me. Lord, help me.” You changed my sorrow into dancing. You took away my clothes of sadness and clothed me in happiness. I will sing to you and not be silent. Lord, my God, I will praise you forever.”
In life, we will have tests and trials. We will have to deal with many situations, good, bad, and frustrating. We can make the choice to either wring our hands with worry or complain. Or we can lift our hands in thanksgiving saying, “Lord, You are my Helper. Thank You!”
It all comes down to how you want to approach things. The One we serve today is the same God David called upon, and as God did for David, we can turn our situations into joy and dancing and find peace. God will turn any situation around when you turn to Him and claim Him as your Helper.
It’s like when a child falls, as a parent or caregiver you will simply pick them up and say, “You’ll be all right. Now, let’s go on.” Likewise, when we, as God’s children, miss it and fall, He is right there to pick us up because He is our Father and our Helper.
We live in uncertain times. Praise the Lord, God’s Word is not an uncertainty. He has promised that He will be here to help us, and He will do just that. Today and every day, resist the tendency to complain, blame, and make excuses. Replace them with thankfulness for the good things God does in your life.
If you need wisdom today, God is your helper. If you need strength today, God is your helper. If you need patience today, God is your helper. Let these four words change your situations daily, God is my Helper. No matter where you are in life, this is not your stopping place! God has more in store for you, and He is your Helper!
