The Victory of the Man of God

Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David’s hand. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
1 Samuel 17:50-51 (NASB)

Today in “The Man of God Series” in David’s encounter with Goliath we discuss the victory of the man of God.

We have looked at David’s battle with Goliath discovering what we can learn from it for our battles as men of God in a hostile world. As David was chosen for a Godly purpose, so are we today in the face of evil. As David was attacked by evil so are we, he stood his ground in Godly strength – so can we. David did not remain on the defensive, he took action against his enemy in the strength provided by God – so can we today.

Goliath attacked and instead of retreating or awaiting his fate, David responded positively with the weapons he had, in full confidence of God who enabled him. “Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and stone,” the LORD of hosts had sealed the victory before the first blow was struck. In the Hebrew to “prevail” is to be strong, courageous, and firm. Strong not just physically but spiritually, knowing in Whom he trusted. Having the courage to face any enemy in faith, and standing his ground firmly as a chosen man of God. In this David felled the giant like a mighty oak in a clearing, delivering the death blow by the giant’s own sword.

This is the type of resolute victory men of God can achieve in the Almighty’s strength, felling spiritual giants before us. As David took Goliath’s head we see the first effect his victory had, the Philistine army was overcome by fear and fled the battlefield. Our own victories by Godly power can have a similar effect on the demons we face daily, for at the name of Jesus every knee must bow (Philippians 2:10).

Dear reader, I encourage you to prevail by God’s mighty hand against your evil enemies today. Be strong in Him, courageous by His Word, and, firm on the Rock on which you stand. As a man of God, your victory is assured!
